Concert Review:Lauryn Hill Stuns Charlotte…*Blank Stare*

Posted by soulHigh On January - 10 - 2011

WARNING: It takes A LOT for me to give any show a negative review. I’m always in search of the positive, because there has to be…right? So if you are an avid Lauryn Hill fan (which I also consider myself) and you’re easily offended…DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW. That being said, let me recollect last night’s show in Charlotte. Atlanta, beware!

Although I was one of the very few to get my tickets on the morning they went on sale for the Atlanta show, I made the trip to Charlotte with a friend who wasn’t so lucky(I guess that depends on how you look at it). As we drove up 85, we made a pact that we’d have no expectations, this way we’d be prepared for anything.  Totally glad we had that talk, by the way.

Let’s start with the venue.  The doors were supposed to open at 9:00 pm.  When we arrived(approximately 9:15pm), the line was literally wrapped around the venue -twice.  Not to mention, it was about 20 degrees below ANTARTICA! So, after losing all 10 fingers, or at least the feeling in them, we made it inside and mentally prepared for what was about to go down.

Lauryn took the stage at 11:45 pm. Was I surprised? No! I’d actually guessed an 11:30 pm start time, so I wasn’t that far off. From the moment she opened her mouth to sing the first note, I knew this was going to be a very interesting night. Dressed in a brown get-up with what appeared to be a dead raccoon scarf thingy, she directed the band and her background singers like a conductor. At one point, I thought we were being punked.  Will the real Lauryn Hill please stand up? Just saying.  Apparently when some artists ‘go away’ and make their ‘grand return’ something happens to their vocal ability.  Reminiscent of Whitney Houston’s new talk-singing(which confuses me so much), Lauryn annihilated “When It Hurts So Bad”. Oh the irony.  She went on to sing several songs from her album, which seemed unrecognizable and remixed.   It was almost as if she didn’t want to sing the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill joints. The crowd stood there in amazement.

Once she moved into the Fugees era, the old Lauryn’s spirit possessed her and for once, the crowd was rocking.  Her lyricism hasn’t faded.  Hip hop reigns supreme, at least for her live show.  Because we had zero expectations and I mean NADA, we weren’t disappointed.  It was entertaining, if nothing else.

ATL, don’t say no one told you! You’re up next!

Concert Review: One Music Fest unites music lovers in Atlanta

Posted by 4daLove On August - 3 - 2010

One Music Fest logoWe came ready and hyped. And 2 hours in, we almost passed out from heat exhaustion. Needless to say, the sun was blazin’ when the ADDIKTS arrived to One Music Fest on Saturday. For the first hour or two, we weren’t sure how long we were going to last.  Things were looking a little shaky…

By 3:30, we had made our way down to stage 2 to check out Memphis-native, Nate Walka. A talented songwriter, turned artist to claim his own, Nate really impressed us with his energy.

When the clock struck 5:00, the crowd was still a little light, we didn’t know the performance schedule and then, the rain came.

We fled for whatever cover we could find. On the inside of the sponsor lounge, DJ Cha Cha and DJ Jahmad kept us dry and groovin’ while we waited the rain out.

After the heat, rain and spending $15 on water and $4 for a slice of pizza, I wasn’t feeling too jazzed about how the rest of One Music Fest was going to go down. But being the music ADDIKTS we are, we stayed the course.

The rain must have done the trick, because by 7:00, with Twitter abuzz about the arrival of Goapele, things started getting good. Goapele looked absolutely gorgeous and spread her energy thru the crowd, singing her hits, “First Love”, “Back to You“, and one of the ADDIKTS’ favorite, “Closer.”

DeLaSoul moved the crowd like it was ’89 again, covering a range of songs from their decades long discography. And finally, around 11:00, Common was ready to “Go” and did his thing, covering great hip-hop songs by the likes of Biggie, 2Pac, LilWayne and more. Common even spit a pretty dang-on good freestyle that proved he can go as hard as any other rapper.

Overall, One Music Fest was one hella of way to spend a summer Saturday. Big thanks to all the visionaries and individuals (King Plow Events, One Stop Productions, Sol Fusion, Garner Circle PR et al) that put in countless hours to pull off the event.

To fully describe the experience here would do it no justice. Check out our Twitter timeline and our photo gallery, so you can see what you missed if you weren’t there. And if you were, just reminisce and start getting ready for next year!

Concert Review: B.O.B. flies high in his hometown

Posted by 4daLove On August - 2 - 2010

BoB1The words, “FREE CONCERT” are heaven to any music ADDIKT’s ears. So when the ADDIKTS were invited to B.o.B‘s. free show on Saturday at Centerstage – courtesy of HP, Microsoft Windows 7 and MySpace Music - we were there with bells on.

Billed as a show for “All Ages,” I personally was a little afraid that I would be mistaken for someone’s mother, as most of the fans there were clearly teenagers and college students.

Playboy Tre (featured on B.o.B’s song Bet I) and a label mate (whose name I didn’t catch, but who was really good) opened the show. And definitely got the crowd good and ready for the main event.

Backed by the sounds of DJ Knuckles, B.o.B. took the stage right on time and treated the young and the old (pretty much just me) to a large portion of the tracks from his album, “B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray.” The concert was streamed live on MySpace and even after the cameras went off, B.o.B continued to perform for his fans.

Beyond his popular radio tracks, “Nothin’ on You,” and “Airplanes,” I hadn’t heard much of his album. So, I was pleasantly surprised (and shocked) to see him pull out a guitar to perform “Lovlier than You” and take to the keys to perform an encore set. If you missed the live stream, check out snippet below of B.o.B performing Nothin on You and see more video from the show on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/musicaddikts).

The concert was part of HP’s Summer Music Campaign, a promotion designed to promote better sounding music on PCs. Before the show, fans got to touch and listen to tunes on the new HP computers integrated with Beats Audio, a HP/Dr. Dre collaboration. I was wowed by the sound I heard on the HP computers with Beats Audio headphones. Every bass and drum beat was clear as day. Definitely thinking about upgrading my music playing hardware.

Beats by Dr. Dre headphones

Kudos to HP, Microsoft Windows 7 and MySpace Music for bringing the great sound of good music to the summer of 2010.

Essence 2010: The Re-cap

If you know us ADDIKTS, then you know that we will travel anywhere for a concert. So, Essence Music Festival 2010 was no exception. 2 weeks ago (it’s taken me that long to recover and write this), with suitcase, sunscreen and camera in tow, I headed down to New Orleans, Louisiana expecting nothing less than great music, delicious food and memorable times with friends. I got all of that and then some.

The EXPERIENCE

I ate way to much. If I never see another po’boy or beignet, it will be too soon. I danced my heart out all weekend got to experience a city that I definitely plan to visit again.

THE MUSIC

It’s no secret, I went to Essence to see Janet. And on Friday night, the Louisiana Superdome was the spot to be. Monica started the night’s musical overload with a great set of of her old and new favorites. Even though almost all of the crowd was still at their hotels picking outfits and no one was there for her set, Monica didn’t seem to mind. She sounded and looked great.

Continuing as scheduled Raphael Saadiq was up next and did the best he could, considering the average age of the crowd was 35+ and didn’t know most of his songs. After Raphael, I headed upstairs to the McDonald’s Superlounge to check out Arrested Development. Didn’t realize how much I missed this guys.

Arrested Development did a great set, mixing in their old hits that everyone still loves, “Tennessee, Mr. Wendal & Everyday People,” along with new ones off their new album, “Stronger.”

I made it back downstairs to the main stage just in time to catch the tail end of Charlie Wilson’s enthusiastic performance.

At 11:30pm, the dome went dark and it was time….

Janet Jackson took the stage and rocked it for a solid 2 hours. By 1:30am, this ADDIKTS was worn out. Janet’s performance and all the great times at Essence is just too much to re-cap right here. So, check out Essence.com for all the sights and sounds that I couldn’t get for you.

Can’t wait to see who is in the line-up for Essence 2011!
