Concert Review: One Music Fest unites music lovers in Atlanta

Posted by 4daLove On August - 3 - 2010

One Music Fest logoWe came ready and hyped. And 2 hours in, we almost passed out from heat exhaustion. Needless to say, the sun was blazin’ when the ADDIKTS arrived to One Music Fest on Saturday. For the first hour or two, we weren’t sure how long we were going to last.  Things were looking a little shaky…

By 3:30, we had made our way down to stage 2 to check out Memphis-native, Nate Walka. A talented songwriter, turned artist to claim his own, Nate really impressed us with his energy.

When the clock struck 5:00, the crowd was still a little light, we didn’t know the performance schedule and then, the rain came.

We fled for whatever cover we could find. On the inside of the sponsor lounge, DJ Cha Cha and DJ Jahmad kept us dry and groovin’ while we waited the rain out.

After the heat, rain and spending $15 on water and $4 for a slice of pizza, I wasn’t feeling too jazzed about how the rest of One Music Fest was going to go down. But being the music ADDIKTS we are, we stayed the course.

The rain must have done the trick, because by 7:00, with Twitter abuzz about the arrival of Goapele, things started getting good. Goapele looked absolutely gorgeous and spread her energy thru the crowd, singing her hits, “First Love”, “Back to You“, and one of the ADDIKTS’ favorite, “Closer.”

DeLaSoul moved the crowd like it was ’89 again, covering a range of songs from their decades long discography. And finally, around 11:00, Common was ready to “Go” and did his thing, covering great hip-hop songs by the likes of Biggie, 2Pac, LilWayne and more. Common even spit a pretty dang-on good freestyle that proved he can go as hard as any other rapper.

Overall, One Music Fest was one hella of way to spend a summer Saturday. Big thanks to all the visionaries and individuals (King Plow Events, One Stop Productions, Sol Fusion, Garner Circle PR et al) that put in countless hours to pull off the event.

To fully describe the experience here would do it no justice. Check out our Twitter timeline and our photo gallery, so you can see what you missed if you weren’t there. And if you were, just reminisce and start getting ready for next year!

Week to week, us ADDIKTS are continually amazed at the breadth of talent and music that has made up American History. This week, we remember Curtis Mayfield. A multi-instrumentalist, Mayfield graced the earth with his presence for a short 57 years, but his music lives on.

Best known for his production of the “SuperFly” soundtrack, Mayfield was also a member of the famed group, The Impressions.  The Superfly soundtrack was noted for its deviation from ghetto excessiveness characterizing earlier blaxploitation works. Instead, Mayfield used the soundtrack as a platform to comment on real issues affecting black in urban, economically depressed communities.

What Talib Kweli, Common and others did for socially conscious rap, Mayfield did for R&B and funk.

Mayfield met his maker in 1999, sadly leaving behind a host of family members including his wife, brother, sisters, 10 children and 7 grandchildren.
